DescriptionDescription: The use of cast iron instead of gold and other precious metals for jewellery became trendy in Prussia in the hard times during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1813, Princess Madeleine of Prussia beseeched all Prussian women to donate their gold to the war effort. In compensation, they were given a brooch or ring with the inscription “GOLD GAB ICH FÜR EISEN” (I gave gold for iron). Cast-iron jewellery became a speciality in Berlin and started a fashion that spread far beyond the German borders.
