DescriptionDescription: Wearing traditional costumes, Neapolitans perform a merry folk dance. Vesuvius fumes in the background. Sablet’s depiction seems authentic even if some of the figures look almost like caricatures. He may have been inspired by characters from opera buffa, a type of comic opera. The work was commissioned by Gustav III after his visit to Naples. His hosts, Ferdinand IV and Maria Carolina, ensured that he saw such popular entertainments.
