DescriptionDescription: In 1864, Amanda Sidwall was one of the first women to be admitted to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm after it had opened its doors to female students. Emma Ekwall probably painted this portrait when they trained there together. Ekwall was subsequently the first woman to be awarded a royal medal as a student at the Academy. In the 1870s their paths separated, Sidwall going to Paris while Ekwall continued her training in Germany. In the 1880s they resumed their friendship in Stockholm.
