The design, centred on a large oval space (116 palmi long to 85 palmi wide) surmounted by a dome, depends on Vignola’s and Mascarino’s studies for centralised churches. Four domed square chapels on the diagonals flank two rectangular vestibules on the transversal axis, leading to the courtyard. Here, probably to allow for the increased dimensions of the church building, Volterra removed the surrounding porticoes. On either side of the choir are two rectangular sacristies, one assigned to local priests and one to foreign priests. Narrow passages cut through the piers were added to the project by means of four strips of paper glued on to the sheet. Between the presentation of the drawing and the laying of the first stone, celebrated on 20 May 1592, the plan appears to have been refined, as well as the church’s exterior features. After the death of Volterra in 1594, Filippo Breccioli, soprastante from 1592, and Carlo Maderno took over the construction, following the overall project submitted to Cardinal Antonio Maria Salviati by Volterra, as Hibbard convincingly argued. The façade, built by Maderno but stylistically consistent with Volterra’s work, is an elaboration of that shown in the Stockholm drawings, with the single addition of two side portals.
