DescriptionDescription: On 28 April 1784, Desprez signed a two-year contract making him responsible for scenography at the Royal Opera in Stockholm. He had also been commissioned to produce two paintings of Gustav III’s visit to Rome: one of Christmas mass, the other of Easter mass. The king may have already seen Desprez’ evocative depictions of the interior of St. Peter’s Basilica. However, the painting of Easter mass with a giant Lenten cross was never completed.
