Evangelisten Johannes. Evangelisten Johannes, också kallad Johannes Teologen, lyssnar med en tystnadens gest mot munnen till Guds budbärare. Detta tema förekommer i en snarlik version på en bekant ikon som 1673 målades av Simon Usjakov.
Den svepande draperibehandlingen tyder på stark påverkan från västeuropeisk barock.

The inscription on the open book
comprises the opening words of the
Gospel of St John. The Evangelist’s
symbol of the eagle, is at the left. Top
left is a triangle with the word BOG
(God). The painting, of high quality,
is in late Baroque style. The combination
of Eastern and Western that is
encountered here, in terms of both
style and iconography, is commonly
termed frazhskaya manera. This icon
is partly derived from the panel on this
theme by Tikhon Filatev, a pupil of
S.Ushakov, which is now in the Tretyakov
Gallery, Moscow (inv. no 15271).1
