SCRIPT: Gothic minuscule. RUBRICATION: No rubrics. Text Calendar. Sister leaves 1. Baltimore, Walters Art Gallery, W. 98. Decoration Calendar from a psalter. On each recto page an image of the labours of the month in a medallion. On each verso page there is a zodiac image inside a medallion. Provenance 1. Completed c. 1300 for the Bayon family by a workshop in Reims. 2. Death of Henricus de Bayon marked in the book in 1334. 2. Purchased in 1951 by the Nationalmuseum from Art dealer La Bibliophila in Milan. Exhibited 1. Copenhagen, National Museum, Gyldne Böger, April-May 1952. 2. Stockholm, Nationalmuseum, Gyllenne böcker, May-September 1952. Commentary In the foot of fol. 3 is the inscription Obiit Dns Henricus Miles Dns de Bayon anno Dni MCCCXXXIV. The family Bayon was a branch of the family of the Dukes of Lorraine. Their family seat was at Bayon Castle about 30km south of Nancy. Henri’s father, Jacques de Bayon was a notable knight in the service of King Philip IV during the Franco-Flemish War (1297-1305). Jacques de Bayon was married to Agnes Choiseul. Nordenfalk suggested that Agnes or some relation to her was the first owner of this manuscript. Nordenfalk (1979), following an unpublished work by François Avril has further suggested that the calendar has its origin in a Book of Hours owned by the Walters Art Gallery (W. 98). Furthermore, Avril in this work traced the manuscript to a workshop in Reims.
