DescriptionExhibition text: Marguerite Gérard, a pupil and collaborator of Jean-Honoré Fragonard, her brother-in-law, made a name for herself in the late 1780s. Her genre scenes and fine touch, evocative of 17th-century Dutch painting, appealed to collectors both before and after the French Revolution. Here, the Empire-style armchair discreetly suggests the topicality of the scene. A woman has just received a letter from her husband, engaged in the Napoleonic Wars; her father searches on a globe for the origin of the letter.
