DescriptionDescription: The playing-card manufacturer Herman Casselle, from Swedish Pomerania, was a man of many talents who saw that there was money to be made from painting portrait miniatures for the middle classes in the early 19th century. One example is his profile portrait of Anna Maria Lenngren. It is built up from small dots and strokes and simple shadow effects, giving it a two-dimensional feel. On the reverse is a scene from Torquato Tasso’s Gerusalemme liberata, which Lenngren had translated.
