DescriptionDescription: When Erik Dahlbergh started to plan the major publication on ancient and modern Sweden Suecia antiqua et hodierna in the 1660s, he had studied French topographic views by Jean Marot and Israël Silvestre. Interestingly, the first engravers were also French. They populated the views with scenes of people working, walking, riding horses or travelling in elegant carriages. The image convention is clear – the gentry and the workers move in parallel worlds.
