DescriptionDescription: This portrait was painted the year Selma Matilda Cassel married Samuel Gustaf Benedicks, hence the emphasis on the ring on her left hand and the innocent white of her dress. In her right hand she holds a miniature of her mother, Vivika, née Strokirk. Westin is following a portrait tradition from the Renaissance, placing his sitter against a background of drapery and a landscape view. His skill as a portraitist won him a position as court painter.
