DescriptionDescription: Théodore Rousseau sketched continually during his time in the natural world, often in the forest around Barbizon, outside Paris, where he laid the foundations for a renewal in landscape painting. His sketches are often rapid impressions of different elements that later appeared in his paintings. To achieve the greatest possible effect with the least possible means, Rousseau experimented with different techniques – here, thin layers of charcoal precisely convey the atmosphere of the place.
