DescriptionDescription: Berggren, a wholesale merchant, had a modern drawing room to suggest taste and cultivation, in keeping with the ideals of the day. Older art featured, but also a newly made Rococo sofa in 18th-century style and a patterned fitted carpet. David Hechler’s Descent from the Cross, from 1651, stands on the table. On the wall is Nils Andersson’s Forest landscape with shepherd boys and cattle, signed 1856. Both works are now in the museum’s collection.

Additional texteDescription: The couple seems to be studying a newly-bought work of art, since there is no hanging device on its reverse side. The new painting is probably intended to replace one of the two paintings that have been removed, leaving distinct marks on the wall. The objects adorning the room reveal the couple as avid collectors and, unlike the norm at the time, the husband and wife are presented as connoisseurs on an equal footing.
