DescriptionDescription: Wertmüller painted his artist friend Grandel after returning from his studies in Rome. No one needs to wonder about the sitter’s profession, as he is holding a large medal. The adventurous Grandel intended to continue his education in Rome, but his radical opinions led to him spending a year imprisoned in Castel Sant’Angelo. Wertmüller’s portrait is influenced by Neoclassicism’s strict emphasis on form rather than colour.

Additional texteDescription: From 1780, Lars Grandel studied engraving in Paris, then in Florence and Rome, staying in Rome for sixteen years. He was commissioned for work on Gustav III’s medallic history, a propaganda piece presenting important events in the king’s life. The engraver’s finest work was the medal commemorating the 1772 coup, minted in 1790. Louis Masreliez’ originals drafts were sent to Rome, where Grandel produced the stamps that were then sent to Stockholm.
