Description: Cranach’s portrait of Martin Luther and Katharina von Bora spread through copies. They have played a decisive role in the perception of the church reformer as harsh, humourless and aloof. However, according to contemporary sources, Luther was well aware of this world and had a drastic sense of humour, while being a profound believer and a learned theologian. The portrait of Luther carries Cranach’s signature, a winged dragon.

Beskrivning: Cranachs porträtt av Martin Luther och Katharina von Bora spreds genom målade kopior och grafiska blad. De har haft avgörande betydelse för uppfattningen av kyrkoreformatorn som barsk, humorbefriad och världsfrånvänd. Av samtida källor framgår dock att Luther var väl medveten om denna världen och hade en drastisk humor, samtidigt som han var en djupt troende och lärd teolog. Porträttet av Luther har Cranachs signatur, en bevingad drake.
