DescriptionDescription: Still life with monogrammed glass goblet from Kungsholm glassworks. The design of early glass from Kungsholm glassworks was closely related to Venetian glass. Glassblowers of Italian origin had been employed and they excelled in advanced designs. The model for these cups was produced for the wedding of Carl XI to the Danish princess Ulrika Eleonoras at Skottorp palace in Halland in 1680. The marriage formed part of the peace overtures between Sweden and Denmark. The stem of the cup takes the form of the royal couple’s double monogram with a double C for Carl. This design had been inspired by Venetian winged glasses. Today only four monogram glass goblets from Kungsholm glassworks survive. Three of these extremely fragile objects are in Nationalmuseum’s collections. The artist came from Germany in 1678 and worked for George de Besche, who owned, for instance, the ironworks at Forsmark in Uppland and was a partner of Louis de Geer.
