DescriptionDescription: Black chalk, pen and brown ink, grey wash, 190 x 293 mm. Ruled framing lines in brown ink. No watermark. Chain lines: 35 mm. Mark of the Royal Collection (Lugt 1638). Numbered on the old mount, in pen and brown ink, 1747. Inscribed on the verso, in pen and brown ink, Poelenburg (Tessin). Mount: Intact Sparre sheet: no. 1303. The attribution to Poelenburch is possibly due to the bathing nymphs, but the style of the drawing suggests a later date, the manner being closer to Van Wittel. The central group of women and the tree trunk are modelled by parallel hatching in pen, reinforced with brush strokes in grey. A bull was sketched in chalk on the left, but was replaced with a vista. Areas of uniform grey wash indicate the distribution of light and shade. [Magnusson, Dutch Drawings no. 534]
