DescriptionDescription: Black chalk or graphite, point of brush in grey, grey wash, heightened with white, on grey paper, 260 x 176 mm. Laid down. This type of composition, a grisaille painted to look like a niche, with putti or other figures, is similar to painted works by De Wit. Some of the elements occur in a drawing of putti with hunting attributes sold at Sotheby’s, Amsterdam (8 November 2000, lot 156), and yet another version, this time signed and dated, was sold at Christie’s, Paris (23 March 2006, lot 266). The present drawing is too weak to be by De Wit and could at best be a copy. Another drawing by the same hand and in the same manner, also depicting putti with attributes of the hunt, is in the Graphische Sammlung, Munich. [Magnusson, Dutch Drawings no. 524]
