DescriptionDescription: Black chalk, 113 x 127 mm. No watermark. Chain lines: 24 mm. Inscriptions and collectors’ marks: Numbered in the lower right corner, in pen and brown ink, 2944. Mark of the Royal Collection (Lugt 1638). Next to the entry for the present drawing in the 1790 inventory, the name “Pieter van Bloemen” has been added. No reason is given in the 1966 exhibition catalogue for attributing the sheet to Van de Velde. However, this attribution can be supported by a comparison with similar studies in other collections, such as a cow lying down in the British Museum. Both are in black chalk, with both lightly sketched areas and highly finished ones with dense hatching creating a subtle play of grey tones. Other such studies are in the Pierpont Morgan Library.
