DescriptionDescription: Pen and brown ink, grey wash, 223 x 350 mm. Wide framing lines in black ink. Watermark: Horn (close to Heawood 2715: Amsterdam 1668). Chain lines: 24–25 mm. Numbered in the lower right corner, in pen and brown ink, 1464 (Sparre). Mark of the Royal Collection (Lugt 1638). A large part of this sheet is filled with standing and seated prophet-like figures in wide robes. Wash models the folds and gives them a sculpture-like appearance. At the lower right are sketchier figures and groups, only lightly washed. Two different groups with Moses presenting the tablets of the law can be made out: near the bottom centre he holds the tablets in front of him, while to the right he raises them above his head. There are several examples of sheets of this type of spirited scribbles – “geestige crabbelinge” in Zoomer’s terminology – by Jansz. Particularly close in style is one in the Rijksprentenkabinet in Amsterdam. Such assemblages of themes and figures are probably records of works by other artists, rather than Jansz.’s own inventions.
