DescriptionDescription: Graphite, pen and brown ink, on blue-green paper, 227 x 432 mm. Watermark: The letters AB in a circle. Chain lines: 35 mm. Mark of the Royal Collection (Lugt 1638). The underdrawing in graphite indicates the main features, which are elaborated freely in pen and ink. This and the following three drawings are attributed here on the basis of two drawings in the Witt Collection in London, one of them published by Bernt. They share the same precise pen work and the same way of rendering architecture and terrain, but lack the additional wash, and the heightening in white that is such a prominent feature of the London drawings. Further comparable drawings have been published by Röthlisberger. However, as Röthlisberger points out, there are a number of drawings that are very close in style, like our drawings on blue paper, which might need further study.
