DescriptionDescription: Point of brush in grey, grey wash, dark grey body colour, oxidized heightening, 298 x 395 mm. Ruled framing lines in black ink. Vertical fold in the centre. Minor losses along the borders. There are brown strokes resembling fat chalk in areas on the putti and the clouds where one would expect white heightening, but it does not appear to be the normal white body colour. No watermark. Chain lines: 24 mm. Numbered in pen and brown ink, at the lower right, 1568 (Sparre), and in the upper right corner, 40. Mark of the Royal Collection (Lugt 1638). The arrangement of the figures in a single plane, set to one side of the picture, is fairly typical of Grebber’s compositions. But the attribution rests mainly on the close relationship in style with a drawing in Dresden, also representing the “Rest on the Flight”, signed with a monogram. [Magnusson, Dutch Drawings no. 174]
