DescriptionDescription: Pencil, red chalk, 235 x 366 mm. Ruled framing lines in black ink. Watermark: Fleur-de-lis in a shield. Chain lines: 30 mm. Inscribed in the lower right corner, in pen and brown ink, Glauber, and numbered, in pen and black ink, 1. Mark of the Royal Collection (Lugt 1638). This drawing corresponds in almost every detail to an etching by Glauber in a series of twelve landscapes. It is in the same sense, and almost the same size. The kind of systematic hatching that covers the whole surface is similar to that of the etching. Another red chalk drawing in the Wouters Collection in Delft, for another etching in the series, shows the same characteristics, but is mirrored. The present drawing is not, nor is it traced for transfer. It has a certain paleness, similar to a counter-proof, but there is a faint underdrawing in pencil. It could be that a counter-proof was taken from it and used for transfer. It seems less vigorous, and the possibility that it is a copy after the print should perhaps not be ruled out.
