DescriptionDescription: Erik Wahlbergson is best known for his genre, historical and mythological subjects. However, he also painted portraits, both compositions of his own and copies after other artists. In this self-portrait, the emphasis is on his professional pride and intellectual ambition. Dressed in a painter’s smock, Wahlbergson stands at an easel with brushes and palette in his hand. In the background is a sculpture of the goddess Minerva, a reflection of the artist’s interest in ancient mythology. In her left hand, she holds out a sprig of laurel towards the painter, a symbol of both learning and victory.
