DescriptionDescription: Pen and brown ink, grey wash, point of brush and grey body colour, 207 x 284 mm. Ruled framing lines in brown ink (missing along the right side). No watermark. Chain lines: 25 mm. Inscribed on the verso, in pen and brown ink, J: Both. The reddish ink creates a warm luminosity. The figures at the lower left have been added to the finished drawing with the brush, but the outlines of the road in brown ink can be seen through them, in spite of their having been reinforced with dark grey body colour. The addition of the staffage is not necessarily a second thought or an addition by a different hand; some of the wash used in the foliage is similar, and the staffage and the darker shades could very well have been added at the same time.
