DescriptionDescription: Black chalk, grey wash, on brown prepared paper, 184 x 215 mm. The preparation in brown has rubbed off in a few spots in the upper part of the drawing. Watermark: Coat of arms. Chain lines: 25 mm. Numbered in the lower right corner, in pen and brown ink, 1467 (Sparre). A comparable loose sketch with figures in a landscape, with a few strokes in chalk to indicate the limits of the composition, is on the verso of a drawing in Weimar. Bolten dates the recto to 1605–15. The subject matter could be from the Old Testament, such as Elijah and the Widow or Judah and Tamar. [Magnusson, Dutch Drawings no. 59]
