DescriptionDescription: Black chalk, 178 x 248 mm. Ruled framing lines in brown ink. Black stains. Upper and lower right corners torn. Laid down. Marked in the upper right corner with a triangle in red ink (Karlberg Collection), and numbered 53 in brown ink. Inscribed in the lower right corner, in pencil, NBerchem (monogrammed). In the manner of Pieter van Laer. In the late 1640s Berchem etched similar groups of goats and sheep in two series, A Woman’s Sketchbook and A Man’s Sketchbook (Bartsch 29–56). A certain dryness, stiff outlines and a lack of volume suggest a copy. The stains are perhaps an indication that the drawing was made for a print. [Magnusson, Dutch Drawings no. 26]
