DescriptionDescription: Graphite, 295 x 417 mm. Vertical fold in the centre, and an 18 mm vertical cut at the bottom. Worm holes near the lower corners, placed symmetrically and therefore made when the sheet was folded. Laid down. Numbered in the lower right corner, in pen and brown ink, 2108 (Sparre). Mark of the Royal Collection (Lugt 1638). This sheet was one of a large group of landscape drawings, not catalogued individually by Tessin. The attribution is modern. Church buildings figure prominently in many of Beerstraaten’s views of small villages and towns. He is supposedly one of the few Dutch artists of the period who used graphite in the manner shown here. A drawing of the same building is in the collection of C. P. van Eeghen. A comparable drawing showing S. Maartenskerk in Sneed is in the Lugt Collection in Paris. The same manner is found in the drawing of the Waag in Alkmaar given to Anthoine Beerstraaten, in the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, as well as in a drawing ascribed to Abraham Beerstraaten in Berlin.
