DescriptionDescription: Like many artists around the end of the 19th century, Otto Hesselblom stylised his motifs by emphasising outlines. His use of line recalls the contemporary interest in decorative effects and Old Norse design features. The prominent lines are combined with a subtle lifelike rendering of the summer light. Even though Hesselbom based his landscapes on Dalsland, they were felt to be national rather than regional.

Additional texteCatalogue text: Hesselbom liked to paint broad, majestic views of mountain and forest landscapes. The silence, stillness and absence of people convey an almost religious feeling for nature. At the same time, there is a patriotic passion to his pictures. Although he often drew his subjects from Dalsland, he wanted to make this particular province a symbol of Sweden as a whole. His most monumental painting was in fact titled Our Country . Hesselbom’s visual world is representative of the atmospherically charged painting of fin de siècle Sweden. Catalogue text: Like many artists around 1900, Otto Hesselbom stylised his subject matter by emphasising the contours. His lines reveal his interest in decorative effects in the style of the Viennese Secessionists and Old Norse embellishments. The strong lines are combined with a subtle, realistic portrayal of summer light. Although Hesselbom’s landscapes are based specifically on Dalsland, they are perceived to have a national character rather than being regional.
