DescriptionDescription: Inscribed at lower left in pen and brown ink: Gesso and numbered at lower right: 61. Inscribed on a separate piece of paper, glued to the mount: Francois Gessi né a Boulogne en 1588 fut disiple de Caluart et sattacha au Guide il fut grand Imitateur de sa Maniere et ont fait plusieurs ouurages Ensemble (Tessin's hand) The inscription concerning Francesco Gessi is misleading. The drawing is the final sketch for the engraved titlepage of Manzini's "I fuori della giuventù", published at Bologna in 1629 and dedicated "all illᵐᵒ E Rᵐᵒ TRIVVLTII." On either side of the title is a standing saint: on the left, a woman with her feet firmly planted on a snake (St. Margaret?), and, on the right, a man with a horse and a dog (St. Hubert?). Bartsch describes a different composition by Coriolano for a titlepage of smaller size, without, however, giving its date. It is possible that Coriolano engraved titlepages for several editions of Manzini's book, only one of which has been traced. [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 1474]
