DescriptionDescription: VERSO: Drapery study. Red chalk. Provenance: J.T. Sergel (Lugt 2339) Naldini is known for his agitated and electric line, most evident on the recto of this sheet. The standing figure, studied in profile, seems posed to hold something in his proper right hand. While similar to a number of images by Naldini, the figure is close to that of a soldier to the far right in a fresco of the Beheading of St. John the Baptist, in the church of S. Trinità dei Monti, Rome. The luminous drapery study on the verso appears to be for the lower half of a woman seated on the ground, her legs bent to the left, and may be related to one of the female figures in the same chapel. The style of the verso, with its close webbing of chalk strokes, recalls his master, Jacopo da Pontormo. [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 1154]
