DescriptionDescription: François-Marius Granet travelled by boat from Marseille to Livorno in July 1802, and on to Rome. Not until he reached Pisa did he consider himself to have reached the cradle of art and took out his crayons to draw the city’s monuments. This watercolour reflects the early Romantic interest in Mediaeval and Early-Renaissance art and architecture. The drawings show settings that no longer exist – the frescoes in Camposanto di Pisa, for instance, were destroyed in the Second World War.
