Beskrivning: Månadens nyförvärv, Augusti 2017:

Nationalmuseum har förvärvat ett porträtt av skådespelaren Saint-Ange målat av Carl Fredrik von Breda. Detta är ett av en svit rollporträtt, som visar medlemmar av Gustav III:s franska teatertrupp, ledd av den legendariske Jacques Marie Boutet, kallad Monvel. Porträttet är ett utmärkt exempel på den gustavianska tidens konst och samtidigt ett prov på den unge von Bredas självständiga förmåga som porträttmålare.

År 1785 var konstnären Carl Fredrik von Breda 26 år gammal. De äldre kollegorna i Konstakademien betraktade honom som en ung begåvning och ett framtidshopp. Han deltog flitigt i akademiens utställningar och fick sin första medalj redan som nittonåring år 1778, samma år som han påbörjade sina studier. Just 1785 tilldelades von Breda den stora guldmedaljen. Däremot gick han miste om det två år senare utlysta resestipendiet och fick finansiera sin studieresa på annat sätt.

Den lärare som främst kom att påverka von Breda var porträttmålaren och akademiprofessorn Lorens Pasch d.y. Inflytandet från honom är tydligt i de verk som utfördes fram till dess von Breda år 1787 
lämnade Sverige för en längre studieresa till England. Där kom han i kontakt med en av dåtidens mest kända målare och konstteoretiker, Joshua Reynolds. Mötet blev avgörande för von Bredas framtida konstnärskap. Dess konkreta resultat var en genomgripande stilförändring med mer målerisk penselföring och annorlunda färgskala i den svenska konstnärens verk.

Sitt första stora och omtalade uppdrag erhöll von Breda redan som 25-åring. För drottning Sofia Magdalenas räkning utförde han ett porträtt av hennes lille son, kronprins Gustav (IV) Adolf, på gunghäst (Nationalmuseum, Statens porträttsamling, NMGrh 1541). Vid ungefärligen samma tid arbetade von Breda även med två skådespelarporträtt – Jacques Marie Boutet, kallad Monvel (Drottningholms Teatermuseum) samt Joseph Sauze Desguillons (Nationalmuseum, NM 7011). 

Porträttet, som nu förvärvats till Nationalmuseum, föreställer en annan av de franska skådespelarna, monsieur Saint-Ange, verksam i Stockholm 1784-88. Målningen är signerad av Carl Fredrik von Breda år 1785 och ställdes ut på Konstakademien följande år. Saint-Ange avbildades i rollen Crispin i Jean-François Regnards komedi Kärlekens dårskaper (Les Folies amoureuses, 1704). Det framgår av Akademiens katalog att porträttet framställer Saint-Ange när han yttrar repliken ”Vet ni monsieur, att jag har varit i Cremona?” (”Savez vous bien, Monsieur, que j’étois dans Crémone?”).

Crispin är en listig betjänt, anställd hos en ung man som är förälskad i pjäsens hjältinna. I porträttet är munnen en aning öppen, som om han just talar. Minen och de glittrande ögonen ger en vink om rollfigurens förslagenhet. Kostymen antyder en viss snobbighet. Knallgula handskar och ett brett skärp i samma färg står i en djärv kontrast mot den eleganta svarta dräkten. Genom att använda sig av få färger och en komposition med en stor figur framför en neutral bakgrund, har den unge von Breda åstadkommit ett krafftfullt rollporträtt. Målningens manér påminner om hans läromästare Lorens Pasch d.y. Det är dock inte något osjälvständigt verk. Carl Fredrik von Breda har åstadkommit en frisk och levande skildring av aktören Saint-Ange i en av hans roller. Genom porträtten av Saint-Ange och Desguillons, har Nationalmuseum berikat samlingarna med Carl Fredrik von Bredas två bästa rollporträtt i den komiska genren.

Förvärvet har möjliggjorts genom donationsmedel ur Axel Hirsch fond. Nationalmuseum har inga egna medel att förvärva konst och konsthantverk för, utan samlingarna berikas genom gåvor samt stiftelse- och fondmedel.

Nationalmuseum has acquired a portrait by Carl Fredrik von Breda of the actor Saint-Ange. It is one of a suite of role portraits depicting members of King Gustav III’s French theatre troupe led by the legendary Jacques Marie Boutet, known as Monvel. Besides being a superb example of Gustavian art, the portrait shows the young von Breda’s skill as a portrait painter in his own right.

In 1785, Carl Fredrik von Breda was 26 years old. His older colleagues at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts (Konstakademien) saw in him a promising young talent. He was an eager participant in exhibitions at the academy and won his first medal at the age of 19 in 1778, the same year he began his studies. In 1785 von Breda was awarded the gold medal, but he missed out on the travel scholarship, which was instituted two years later, and had to find other means of financing his study tour.
The teacher who had the greatest influence on von Breda was Lorens Pasch the younger, a portrait painter and professor at the academy. His influence is evident in the works von Breda produced until leaving Sweden in 1787 to embark on a lengthy study tour of England. There he became acquainted with Sir Joshua Reynolds, one of the leading painters and art theorists of the day. This encounter had a decisive influence on von Breda’s future art, resulting in a complete stylistic overhaul with more artistic brushwork and a different colour palette.

At the age of only 25, von Breda received his first high-profile commission. At the request of Queen Sofia Magdalena, he painted a portrait of her young son, Crown Prince Gustav (IV) Adolf, on his rocking horse (Nationalmuseum, National Portrait Collection, NMGrh 1541). Around the same time, von Breda also worked on portraits of two actors: Jacques Marie Boutet, known as Monvel (Drottningholms Teatermuseum), and Joseph Sauze Desguillons (Nationalmuseum, NM 7011).

The portrait recently acquired by Nationalmuseum depicts another of the French actors, Monsieur Saint-Ange, who performed in Stockholm from 1784 to 1788. The painting, signed Carl Fredrik von Breda and dated 1785, was exhibited at Konstakademien the following year. Saint-Ange is portrayed in the role of Crispin in Jean-François Regnard’s 1704 comedy Les Folies amoureuses. According to the exhibition catalogue from the academy, the portrait shows Saint-Ange speaking the line “Savez vous bien, Monsieur, que j’étois dans Crémone?” (“Are you 
aware, sir, that I have been in Cremona?”)

Crispin is a wily servant in the employ of a young gentleman who is in love with the play’s heroine. In the portrait his mouth is slightly open, as if he is speaking. His expression and the twinkle in his eye hint at the character’s cunning nature. His outfit suggests a degree of snobbery. Bright yellow gloves and a wide belt in the same colour present a bold contrast to his elegant black attire. By using only a few colours and a composition that sets a large figure against a neutral background, the young von Breda created a powerful role portrait. The manner of the painting is reminiscent of von Breda’s teacher, Lorens Pasch the younger, but the work is not lacking in originality. Carl Fredrik von Breda produced a fresh, lively depiction of the actor Saint-Ange in one of his roles.

The portraits of Saint-Ange and Desguillons, von Breda’s two finest role portraits in the comic genre, are welcome additions to the Nationalmuseum collection.
