DescriptionDescription: Watermark: Grapes. Inscribed in upper margin: "Illmo Sig. Eugenio Prin. di Strengoli. P.L. Ghezzi" Provenance: Faerber & Maison, London Pier Leone Ghezzi has been considered the greatest Italian caricaturist of the 18th century. His earliest caricatures are dated c. 1700-02 and can be traced in various collections: Gabinetto delle Stampe of the Biblioteca Vaticana, all dated 1702, in the Enrico Galluppi Collection and Museo Teatrale del Bucardo in Rome. Many of them depict themes from the commedia dell´arte. Our sheet belonged to a set of at least thirty drawings that were sold in London in 1969, all from this early phase of Ghezzi´s activity. they all represent members of the Roman aristocracy. These drawings are done swiftly, their forms are loose, the models act exuberantly and swagger about, the heads are oversized and the legs tiny. [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 717]
