DescriptionDescription: Pen and brown ink, brown wash, c. 157 x 69 mm. The drawing has been irregularly cut on the left. Ruled framing lines in black ink added afterwards. Numerous small brown stains. Laid down. Mark of J. G. De la Gardie (Lugt 2722a). On the verso, inscribed in pencil with a monogram ATSS, perhaps referring to Albert of Saxe-Teschen (Lugt 178c: incorrectly attributed to a “Count Sparr”). The pose is that of an actor, and recalls figures drawn in a similar manner by Buytewech. The attribution to Andries Both goes back to Bartsch’s catalogue of the de Ligne Collection and seems justified. However, the other drawings from the same group, also preserved in Stockholm, seem to be by Bouckhorst (entries 92–94) and this drawing, too, could be by him. [Magnusson, Dutch Drawings no. 86]
