DescriptionDescription: Julia Beck travelled to France in 1881 and was to remain there for the rest of her life. In the mid-1880s she joined the Opposition movement, which objected to the Academy of Art’s antiquated teaching methods. It was in this eventful period that Beck painted this work. The motif probably comes from Sweden, but the ethereal character of the work testifies to influences from the new trends in contemporary French art.
