DescriptionDescription: During his years in Italy (1841–51), Palm painted atmospheric landscapes around Rome, often in a morning or evening light. He has sketched the park of the Villa Borghese. In the right foreground, part of a riding arena can be seen, with spectators’ terraces painted as parallel lines. The sun shines on the tall stone pines, while the shorter hollies and cypresses are in shadow. In the pine branches, pencil and brush underdrawing can be made out.
