DescriptionDescription: Carl Larsson’s monumental painting Open-Air Painter has been seen as a manifesto for Nordic outdoor realism, which came into style in the 1880s. In addition to being a comment on the new practice of painting outdoors, it illustrates the repercussions this had on Scandinavian artists, who were now expected to work directly before their subject even in the cold winter. This specifically Nordic dimension of portraying the seasons attracted great attention when the painting was shown in Paris in 1886. Exhibition text: In the fall of 1885, Larsson moved with his family to a small house with a garden on Åsögatan on Södermalm. During the winter, he completed the large Open-Air Painter, which attracted attention when it was exhibited at the Paris Salon the following spring. The image of the plein air painter, dressed in full winter gear and braving the cold, can be seen as a realist manifesto. The seemingly casual perspective enhances the impression of an authentic depiction of the moment.
