Additional texteExhibition text: Hilleström called this painting “Two Ladies Studying a Small Painting or Engraving by Candlelight”. The women are looking at a piece of embroidery on a tambour. This form of sewing became popular in the 18th century – an engraving was copied in embroidery with hair and black silk on white satin fabric. The wall behind the women is adorned with pictures in gilt frames. The painting bears witness of a new abundance of pictures in wealthier homes during this period.
