DescriptionExhibition text: Ernst Josephson traveled to Spain in 1881. He wanted to study the Spanish old masters in the museums and to depict Spanish folk life. Spanish Smiths was painted in the district of Triana in Seville, which was predominantly inhabited by Romani people. The artist himself recounted how the blacksmiths had asked him to portray them standing outside their forge. Their vital and powerful body language contrasts sharply with the picturesque genre scenes of the time.
