Additional texteWebbtext (Beskrivning): For some years, Paul Gauguin was one of the French Impressionists who sought to capture the fleeting moment in their art. His focus eventually changed direction, however, towards processing and analysing his impressions and creating a synthesis in images with distinctly decorative qualities – a new style of painting that was called Synthesism. The artist Richard Bergh – director of the Nationalmuseum in 1915–1919, bought this painting from Gauguin’s Danish wife in 1892. It had a huge inspirational impact on several Swedish artists in the circle around Bergh. Exhibition text: In the 1870s and 1880s there were a number of artist colonies in Brittany in France. The untouched nature of the area and its religious population attracted artists with the exotic notion of finding something original. In Pont Aven, Paul Gauguin experimented with a synthesizing style, where billowing lines and strong fields of colour are set against each other. He then left Western culture altogether and went to Tahiti.
