DescriptionDescription: These paintings seem to resound with singing and music. A prostitute raises her glass, laughing and gazing seductively at her lute-playing companion. In the 17th century, laughter was interpreted as a sign of a lack of reason among the lower classes, who were considered to be at the mercy of their fleshly lusts. These images warned against indulging in sensual pleasures, but were also seen as entertaining.
