DescriptionDescription: After a period drawing the fortifications at Sveaborg for Field Marshal Augustin Ehrensvärd, Elias Martin travelled to Paris. On Alexander Roslin’s recommendation, he was accepted into the French Academy of Fine Arts in 1766. Martin was a student of Joseph Vernet and painted cityscapes and landscapes, called vedute, in the same style as his teacher. They often have a low horizon and dramatic shifts in colour and light, as in this view of Stockholm.
