DescriptionDescription: Point of brush in brown (counter-proof), 245 x 417 mm. Scattered oil stains, the right-hand part soaked in oil and darkened. Inscriptions and collectors’ marks: Inscribed in the upper left corner, in pencil, P. Quast. Mark of Count J. G. De la Gardie (Lugt 2722a). Bartsch described this drawing as a “Contrepreuve tiree du contour fait d’une couleur brune sur la toile d’un tableau”. The seemingly spontaneous handling of the brush suggests a counter-proof of a brush drawing rather than of an oil painting; this would produce an analogous result. The closest parallels in Quast’s oeuvre seem to be two drawings in Edinburgh: a group of fighting peasants, dated 1644, and a contour drawing with sparse hatching of a cook holding a bowl.
