DescriptionDescription: Studies of individual Roman models in traditional dress could later be included in larger works. They were also often paintings in their own right, as is the case with Eckersberg’s study of a woman from the area of Ciociaria south of Rome. The composition and the explicit three dimensionality reflects contemporary admiration of Raphael, but the ethnographic details were also important. In January 1816 the artist noted that he had rented a costume for two weeks for “Una Ciociara”.
