DescriptionDescription: The Madonna and Child are partly reworked in black chalk, the back of the paper blackened in this area. Squared in red chalk. Lower right corner cut off, lower left corner torn. Watermark: Circle with a coat-of-arms? Inscribed at upper left: "Cesare Nebbia", and numbered in the lower left corner "11", and at lower right "7" and "57". On the backing paper: "Cesare Nebbia da Orvieto discepolo di Gerolamo Muziano." Provenance: Crozat ; C.G. Tessin (Cat 1749, livré 23, no 57, as Nebbia) ; M.G. Anckarsvärd ; A Michelson ; K. Michelson ; Acquired by the museum in 1896 The traditional attribution to Nebbia seems plausible. However, certain features, like the heavy reworking of contours and parallell hatchings, might suggest Nebbia´s collaborator Ricci. It is close to a drawing for a lunette i the Albertina, Vienna. Since this was written Eitel-Porter has shown that this is a study by Nebbia for his painting Dream of Joseph: Rest on the flight to Egypt on the right hand wall of Cappella Sabbatini or del Presepe in the church of the Madonna dei Monti, Rome, painted circa 1581-1582.
