DescriptionDescription: Hans Frederik Gude started out as a landscape painter in a grand, Nordic nationalist tradition. Although he had an ability to revitalize his painting over the decades, and Sandviksfjorden is a good example of that. The motif is related to his grand scenes from Norway but the grandness lies in the beauty of the light and atmosphere rather than in the scenery itself.

Additional texteExhibition text: Hans Frederik Gude is mainly associated with majestic Norwegian views of fjords and mountains. Often on large canvases. He painted this work relatively late in his career. Although the painting is fairly small, the experience of the grandeur of the scene is no less intense. What is most striking is the light – as impressive in itself as in the way Gude painted it and combined it with the shifting motion of the surface of the water.
