DescriptionDescription: Pen and brown ink, 198 x 123 mm. There are faint traces of black chalk or pencil. Repairs in the centre. No watermark. Chain lines: 26 mm. Inscribed on the verso, in graphite, J van der Avelen. Copy after plate no. 91 of the Tekenboek. The sheet has been trimmed so that the point of the halberd and the rear part of the dog are missing. Exceptionally, there is no landscape behind the figure, but the copyist has added a background with a haystack on the right and gallows to the left. The model for the print is in the Cambridge Album. It is one of a small group of model drawings that are not engraved in reverse. However, the copy was made after the print, since it reproduces the hatching between the dog and the soldier’s right leg, a detail missing in the drawing. The attribution to Van den Aveelen is not justified. He was a skilled draughtsman, while this drawing is amateurish. The shaft of the halberd is not even drawn straight. [Magnusson, Dutch Drawings no. 76]
