DescriptionDescription: Irregularly cut. Laid down. Inscribed on the old mount i pen and brown ink: "No 311 Parmegianino" Provenance: M.G. Anckarsvärd ; A Michelson ; K. Michelson ; Acquired by the museum in 1896 The old attribution to Parmegianino is understandable from the fragment of an old man´s head on the right but the putto, as pointed out by Philip Pouncey, is drawn in a manner that recalls Romanino. This attribution did not convince Ruggeri, who argues that, not least on account of the man´s head, the artist should be sought in Lombardy-Emilia, so that Lattanzio Gambara would be a probable name, particularly when one compares preparatory studies of evangelists for frescoes in Parma. Another very close parallel is a study of two putto, in Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo, Brescia, that used to be attributed to Romanino but is regarded by G. Panazza as a work by Gambara. The distinction between Romanino and Gambara is by no means clear. There is also reason to consider a newly-discovered study of Venus with three putti, in Berlin, and a sheet with two nude figures, in a private collection in Zürich. These are still associated with Romanino but their style and manner of drawing are so close to our sheet that they appear to be by the same hand. [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 237]
