DescriptionDescription: Pen and black ink, brown wash, over sketch in black chalk. No watermark. Verso: Light sketch of a saint´s ascension. Black chalk, pen and grey ink. Inscribed at lower right in pen and brown ink: "Gʳ Dⁿ". Inscribed verso in an 18th century hand in pen and grey ink: "No. 56 Pellegrini" (överstruket) "Carletto". Provenance: M.G. Anckarsvärd ; A Michelson ; K. Michelson ; Acquired by the museum in 1896 Although this sheet has an old attribution to "Carletto", it and the next two, which are inscribed "Lisandrino di Milano", form an obvious trio and have the same provenance even before Anckarsvärd: the verso notes with alternative attributions are all by the same, probably Italian, hand. The stylistic features of the drawings are not entirely uniform and various attributions have been suggested even in modern times. At the 1974 exhibition at Fondazione Cini this sheet was ascribed to Pier Antonio Novelli because its construction, with angular outlines, parallel hatching and the features of the figures composed from short strokes and dots, has many counterparts in that artist´s work. The composed character of the three drawings might be explained by their being drafts that were worked up for presentation to a client, and thereby lost something of the spontaneous style that is easier to identify. The rapid verso sketches, however, display clear affinities to similar sheets in Diziani´s oeuvre, e.g. for the "Assumption". The composition of this drawing, with the saints at the foot of a colossal pillar, is suggestive of Carletto Caliari, as the old attribution indicates. But the general structure is wholly 18th century, so that with the inscription lower right, Gʳ Dⁿ, it is reasonable to attribute the composition of Gaspare Diziani. It also seems likely that these drawings are by his hand, despite their lifeless impression. Pignatti has pointed out that Diziani supplements areas of wash with sections of parallel hatching suggesting colour values. This drawing would seem to be a late work by this artist. Cf. the next two numbers. [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 183]
